A slight tilt, a movement across the surface or a variation in a colour transition. These are the marks left by handmade work and by the nature of the clay. Such marks make each ceramic object one of a kind and personal. This is why KUSUR is part of Soil & Oil's approach to making, one that leaves room for the material to have the last word.
KUSUR
Why KUSUR?
KUSUR is the name of the oil burner we finish by hand.
In ceramics, design is not complete the moment the form is given. The clay is shaped, it dries, it is transformed by high heat, and throughout the process it keeps revealing its own nature.
A mark on the surface, a change in the form or a shift in colour that appears after firing can all be details that develop during making. Each of them carries a trace of how the object came to be.
For us, this is exactly where KUSUR finds its meaning.
Because kusur, the Turkish word for imperfection, does not only mean “not perfect”. It tells us that not every decision about an object is made at the start, and that the material, the heat and the making process have the last word. It makes the object one of a kind, without copies, and yours alone.
Even when our pieces come from the same hands, the same material and the same way of making, each one goes through its own process.
This is why, for us, KUSUR is not a flaw to be corrected. It is a character that makes visible how the object was made, and that carries the material’s own share.
